Pixels Ensemble was created in 2016 by pianist Ian Buckle, drawing together some of the finest chamber musicians, orchestra principals and soloists in the UK. Rapidly establishing a firm presence at venues such as Liverpool’s outstanding new Tung Auditorium, Pixels Ensemble are noted for their ‘insight and a sense of perspective’ and ‘fabulously detailed sound’ (Musical Opinion) and renowned for their exemplary programming.
This special programme for Remembrance Sunday consists of music that is stirring and tender without being sentimental. The two charming Rosemary miniatures belong to the pre-war Edwardian salon era. John Ireland’s For Remembrance – a microcosm of his highly distinctive musical language – evokes a bittersweet tone in its undulating harmony. Vaughan Williams’ much-loved The Lark Ascending is heard here in its original 1914 version for violin and piano and the programme culminates in Elgar’s 1919 Piano Quintet – expansive, majestic and full of Elgar’s instantly recognisable long-limbed tunes.
The evening is complemented by a pre-concert talk from Kate Romano on the music that Elgar wrote in response to World War I, from patriotic songs, theatrical scores and grandiose choral works to the remarkable, haunting Piano Quintet.
